The CPIO is the voice of the private investigation industry in Ontario. Our members are a part of a community that actively advocates for the industry, sets the standard for ethical practice, and gives investigators the tools to grow their career. Whether you're just starting out or are a seasoned investigator, there's a membership level designed for where you are in your career. Your application will be reviewed and processed in due course and will be subject to the Board of Directors' approval at quarterly meetings held during the calendar year. The CPIO reserves the right to ask for documentation of experience, licenses and proof of education and/or credentials. Membership Levels
*Memberships are renewed annually and valid from January 1st to December 31st.
For licensed Ontario private investigators. Individual membership is open to those holding a valid Ontario private investigator license with a minimum of 2,000 hours of relevant experience, and employed by or sponsored by a licensed Ontario agency. Membership is subject to Board approval. Read more
For licensed Ontario private investigation agencies. Agency membership is open to any Ontario licensed private investigation agency whose designated representative meets Individual membership criteria. All new agency members are subject to a one-year probationary period, and membership is subject to Board approval. Read more
For those who are early in their private investigation career. Intermediate membership is open to anyone who has a Private Investigator Course Completion Certificate from an authorized course provider or who holds a valid Ontario private investigator license but does not yet meet the experience, employment, or sponsorship requirements of full Individual membership. Membership is subject to Board approval. Read more
For those currently enrolled in a relevant post-secondary program and looking to get a head start in the private investigation profession. Student membership provides early access to the CPIO community, job postings, and the ability to connect with established professionals in the industry. Membership is subject to Board approval. Affiliate membership is open to those who do business with the private investigation industry, support the objectives of CPIO, or are licensed investigators outside of Ontario who are members of a recognized professional association. Membership is subject to Board approval. Read more
