Designations

What is the CPIO Designation Program?

The CPIO Professional Designation Program is Canada's first and only credentialing system built exclusively for licensed Ontario private investigators. Developed in 2020 by the Council of Professional Investigators Ontario, the program offers a three-tier designation pathway — from Certified Professional Investigator (CPIO-PI) through to Certified Master Investigator (CPIO-MI) — recognizing investigators based on experience, training, and continuing education. Unlike designations from outside industries, CPIO credentials are awarded by your peers and tailored entirely to the realities of private investigation work in Ontario. Best of all, the program is included with your CPIO membership at no additional cost.

Why Professional Designations

For the first time in Canada, private investigators have a way to formally demonstrate their achievements, qualifications, and commitment to the profession. The CPIO designation program offers:

  • Industry-specific recognition awarded by your peers
  • Improved professional credibility and marketability
  • Access to relevant, affordable industry training
  • A clear pathway for career advancement
  • Included with your CPIO membership at no additional cost

Previously private investigators had to obtain professional training and certification from other professional organizations in order to be recognized. These outside designations may be valuable but they do not stem from the private investigation industry. They are not awarded by our peers.

The Three-Tier Designation Pathway

The CPIO designation program is structured as a three-tier system, allowing investigators at every stage of their career to participate and advance.

Level 1 — Certified Professional Investigator (CPIO-PI)

For investigators who are established in their career and ready to formalize their credentials.

Requirements:

  • 2,000 hours (one year) of licensed private investigator experience
  • Completion of mandatory CPIO courses
  • Valid Ontario private investigator license
  • CPIO membership in good standing

Post-nominals: CPIO-PI

Signature phrase: "Certified by the Council of Professional Investigators Ontario as a Professional Investigator."

Level 2 — Certified Senior Investigator

(CPIO-SI)

For experienced investigators looking to distinguish themselves as senior professionals.

Requirements:

  • Must hold the CPIO-PI designation
  • 7,500 hours (five years) of licensed private investigator experience
  • Completion of additional mandatory CPIO courses
  • Valid Ontario private investigator license
  • CPIO membership in good standing

Post-nominals: CPIO-SI

Signature phrase: "Certified by the Council of Professional Investigators Ontario as a Senior Investigator."

Level 3 — Certified Master Investigator

(CPIO-MI)

The highest designation available, recognizing the most experienced investigators in the profession.

Requirements:

  • Must hold the CPIO-SI designation
  • 15,000 hours (ten years) of licensed private investigator experience
  • Completion of additional mandatory CPIO courses
  • Valid Ontario private investigator license
  • CPIO membership in good standing

Post-nominals: CPIO-MI

Signature phrase: "Certified by the Council of Professional Investigators Ontario as a Master Investigator."

Designation Courses

All designation candidates must complete a series of CPIO-developed courses tailored specifically to the private investigation industry. Courses are priced to be as affordable as possible, and include topics such as:

Additional courses are continuously being developed and added to the program. Announcements are made to members well in advance of course dates.
