What is the CPIO Designation Program?
The CPIO Professional Designation Program is Canada's first and only credentialing system built exclusively for licensed Ontario private investigators. Developed in 2020 by the Council of Professional Investigators Ontario, the program offers a three-tier designation pathway — from Certified Professional Investigator (CPIO-PI) through to Certified Master Investigator (CPIO-MI) — recognizing investigators based on experience, training, and continuing education. Unlike designations from outside industries, CPIO credentials are awarded by your peers and tailored entirely to the realities of private investigation work in Ontario. Best of all, the program is included with your CPIO membership at no additional cost.
Why Professional Designations
For the first time in Canada, private investigators have a way to formally demonstrate their achievements, qualifications, and commitment to the profession. The CPIO designation program offers:
Previously private investigators had to obtain professional training and certification from other professional organizations in order to be recognized. These outside designations may be valuable but they do not stem from the private investigation industry. They are not awarded by our peers.

Post-nominals: CPIO-PI Signature phrase: "Certified by the Council of Professional Investigators Ontario as a Professional Investigator." | Level 2 — Certified Senior Investigator (CPIO-SI) For experienced investigators looking to distinguish themselves as senior professionals. Requirements:
Post-nominals: CPIO-SI Signature phrase: "Certified by the Council of Professional Investigators Ontario as a Senior Investigator." | Level 3 — Certified Master Investigator (CPIO-MI) The highest designation available, recognizing the most experienced investigators in the profession. Requirements:
