What Matters in Court

This practical, non-technical session explores how digital evidence is located, preserved, and successfully presented in court. Using real case examples, you will see how digital evidence can strengthen — or completely change — the outcome of family, estate, civil, and criminal cases. Learn where digital evidence actually lives, how it can be legally preserved, and how it can be explained to judges and juries.

Alain Filotto has been working with digital evidence for over 18 years, including with his company, Alphafox Forensics. He is a retired Sergeant of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with 29 years of policing experience. The last 10 years of his career were spent with the RCMP's Digital Forensic Services as an examiner and team leader. He is certified by the Technological Crime Branch of the RCMP as a computer forensic examiner. He is a graduate of the computer forensics program of the British Columbia Institute of Technology. He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional which is considered the premiere cybersecurity certification in the industry. Alain holds other certifications and is a court-recognized expert in computer and mobile forensics. He has supported major investigations as an examiner including internet child exploitation, commercial crimes, organized crime, and national security.

Advanced Interview (and Elicitation) Course

This course will provide investigators and intelligence professionals with the strategic frameworks and techniques necessary to conduct effective interviews. Participants will examine the purpose and principles of interviewing and elicitation, with focuses on pre-research methodologies, subject analysis, technique selection, and approach development aimed at obtaining reliable information through purposeful, conversation-based inquiry.

Instruction is led by Shawn Stevenson. Recognized as a current and future leader, Shawn has been awarded a CBC Future 40 for being identified as a future change maker within his professional and larger community. He has been asked to present at international conferences (Building Business Capability, BA World) and has travelled to Kenya and Nigeria in a consulting role.
